Efficient dismantling through rope access and multidisciplinary teamwork
Building on previous successful collaborations, Fugro approached Wagenborg Foxdrill for the removal of the derrick from the geotechnical drilling vessel Fugro Scout.
In the past, Fugro executed similar projects using scaffolding structures, but following Foxdrill’s advice, the company opted for a more efficient and flexible approach: rope access. The rope access approach enabled substantial time and cost savings while minimizing quay occupancy. With an experienced team of IRATA-certified technicians, the dismantling was carried out safely, efficiently, and without the need for scaffolding.
Wagenborg Foxdrill’s strength lies in its multidisciplinary setup – combining rigging, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and rope access expertise under one roof. For this project, that capability was further enhanced through the involvement of other Wagenborg entities: Wagenborg Stevedoring, Wagenborg Agencies, Wagenborg Nedlift, and Wagenborg Foxdrill itself. Wagenborg Stevedoring served as owner of the quay and facilities, Wagenborg Agencies acted as port agent handling administrative and vessel-related matters, and Wagenborg Nedlift supplied the mobile cranes for the heavy lifts. Together, these entities formed one integrated Wagenborg team – combining technical execution, lifting operations, and port logistics into a single coordinated effort.
This collaboration ensured smooth coordination of all onshore and port-related activities, highlighting the benefits of Wagenborg’s integrated service offering. The works took place at the Wagenborg quay in Eemshaven (NL).
Execution and cooperation
Fugro required the project to be completed within two weeks, expecting a day and night shift schedule. Thanks to thorough preparation, short communication lines and an experienced team, Foxdrill completed the entire scope in just one and a half weeks – working daytime only. The team on board consisted of rope access specialists, riggers, mechanical and electrical technicians, supported by a 200T and 450T mobile crane. All necessary tools and rigging equipment were prepared in a 10 ft. equipment container, allowing the crew to work efficiently and independently.
Despite strong winds and heavy rain, the operation proceeded according to plan. Fugro had everything well organized on board – from accommodation to catering – and both the superintendent and vessel manager played an active role in daily coordination meetings, ensuring quick and clear decision-making.
Safety and alignment
Prior to the start of the project, Foxdrill prepared a detailed risk assessment, as is standard practice for all projects. Each workday began with a daily meeting to review progress and align upcoming tasks. Before every complex lift, a toolbox meeting was held together with Fugro, with special attention to loose items, lifting points, communication procedures, and no-go zones.
Fugro’s approach to safety was exemplary. The worksite was properly cordoned off, their safety culture was clearly visible, and their crew operated in a highly professional manner. This shared mindset ensured the entire project was executed without incidents or delays.
Fugro truly deserves a compliment – their professionalism and safety focus matched perfectly with our own.
After removing the derrick, Foxdrill also assisted Fugro with loading and securing the dismantled components, which were later transported for inspection and service.
Result and reflection
The derrick removal was successfully completed ahead of schedule, within one and a half weeks and without the need for night shifts.
The cooperation between Fugro, Wagenborg Foxdrill, Wagenborg Stevedoring, Wagenborg Nedlift and Wagenborg Agencies proved highly effective, demonstrating the strength of Wagenborg’s integrated approach.
At Wagenborg, true strength lies in the integrated collaboration between our divisions — each contributing its own expertise toward a shared goal.
